English Quest

Plan your opinion essay

The Opinion Writing & Essay Structure quest uses a five-paragraph plan: one introduction, three body paragraphs and one conclusion. Each part has a job.

1. Open with a hook and a thesis

A hook catches the reader's interest and fits your topic. For an essay about summer, you could begin: A long, sunny day can become an adventure.

Your thesis states the opinion you will explain. For example: Summer is my favorite season because of outdoor games, family outings and long sunny evenings. The three reasons give the body paragraphs a plan.

An opinion tells what someone thinks or prefers. Different people can reasonably prefer different seasons; the writing task is to explain your own view clearly.

2. Give each body paragraph one main reason

Begin with a topic sentence that introduces that paragraph's reason. Then add supporting details that explain it or give examples.

For a paragraph about outdoor games, a detail about playing catch in the park fits. A detail about visiting a cousin belongs in the family-outings paragraph instead. Both details can be good; they need the right place.

In this plan, the three body paragraphs could cover:

  1. Outdoor games, with examples of activities you enjoy.
  2. Family outings, with details about a trip or shared activity.
  3. Long sunny evenings, with an example of what you can do before sunset.

Use a closing sentence to bring each paragraph back to its main reason. Words such as also, for example and finally can help connect your ideas when they fit.

3. Finish with a conclusion

Restate your opinion in fresh words, briefly bring the three reasons together and finish with a closing thought. For example: Summer is the season I enjoy most. Outdoor games, family outings and bright evenings make it special. That is why I look forward to summer each year.

The conclusion wraps up the reasons you already explained. Save a new main reason for another draft rather than surprising the reader at the very end.

4. Check your plan, then write

Ask whether your opinion is clear, each reason has its own paragraph, and every detail supports the reason beside it. Read the whole essay aloud to check whether the order makes sense.

The quest checks focused skills such as matching details and ordering paragraphs. Its writing workspace saves your own plan and draft in this browser; it does not automatically grade your free writing or upload it for marking.
